Equity Tools

How often have you found yourself in a conversation about disparities or discrimination in the US and about halfway through the conversation realized that the other person had a completely different understanding or definition of the issue you were discussing? Weekly? Every other day? Just me? Regardless of how often this comes up for you, it’s a frustrating problem whenever it arises.

So this week, we want to introduce you to an incredible tool that will hopefully prevent that problem in our future Ripple Resource emails and in future conversations you find yourself in about anti-racism and anti-oppression: Racial Equity Tools’ Glossary!

Racial Equity Tools has compiled a HUGE list of terms and definitions that are frequently (and not so frequently) used in anti-racism, anti-oppression, and DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) work. AND they regularly update the glossary to stay up to date on the ever changing language in this work. This page has been a godsend to me. So bookmark it, star it, or just keep the tab open!

Anytime we drop a new term in our ensuing emails, we’ll link to Racial Equity Tools’ Glossary for their thorough and sourced definition. Or if we use language you aren’t the most familiar with, search for it in their glossary. Chances are it will be there!

Reflection Questions & Digging Deeper:

Take a moment to explore some of the definitions in the Racial Equity Tools’ Glossary. Maybe look at two terms you’ve heard a lot and two terms you’ve never heard before. Was the information on their page helpful? Is there a DEI term you’ve heard before missing that we can help explain? Let us know if you have the chance to use this resource next time you find yourself in a conversation about racism or another similar topic. Did you feel more equipped in that discussion as a result? Stay tuned for our Ripple Resource email next week as we discuss how to apply your continually expanding understanding of oppression to your sphere of influence!
